In less than a month, potentially the biggest film of the year is scheduled to hit theatres. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will more than definitely break box office records. If it wasn’t for a small film opening this December by the name of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I’d go so far as to say that no other film in 2015 will be bigger. Whichever film ends up on top, there’s one more thing they have in common: when it comes to collectibles, they’ll successfully separate fans’ money from their bank accounts.
Though I tend to fall more in the Star Wars collecting group, I no less appreciate the significance and pure awesomeness of what we’ll be getting from companies in relation to the Marvel cinematic universe. And make no mistake: though there are no strings on Ultron, the boys at Marvel and Disney and their many licensees will have no trouble pulling the strings that control your wallet.
For your viewing pleasure, I’d like to preview a set of figures that are more on the affordable end of collecting, and one figure that is intended for die hard fans.
First up is S.H. Figuarts’ The Avengers Age of Ultron figures. These five figures are moderately priced and very display friendly. With articulation second to none, you will be able to place each figure in many a dynamic pose for your display case. Though they are a bit too expensive to fall into the kid-friendly category, collectors that enjoy sharing the hobby with their younger children will be able to get some quality family time and enjoyment out of these guys. These figures are selling out quickly at online retailers such as BigBadToyStore, so pre-order them while you can, or check with your local shops to see if they will be getting any in. With Comic Convention season upon us, conventions could potentially be another great place to pick them up; so long as the mark-up isn’t too crazy.
Next up comes a wonderful tribute to the Man himself, Stan Lee. This 1/6th scale collectible figure comes to us from DAS TOYZ and is pretty darn amazing. Though priced a bit high for what you get ($249.99), this representation of Mr. Lee would be a fitting tribute to add to any fan’s collection. An American icon, Stan Lee is a comic book writer since the 1940s. He is also an editor, publisher, media Producer, television host, actor, and former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
Collaborating with several artists, Stan Lee co-created Spider-Man, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, X- Men, Iron Man, and Thor.
In addition, he headed the first major successful challenge to the industry’s censorship organization, the Comics Code Authority, and forced it to reform its policies.
Stan Lee also led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation, making it what it is today.
He was inducted into the comic book industry’s Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Jack Kirby Hall of fame in 1995.
Stan Lee received a National Medal of Arts in 2008.
